So I've been asking this question a lot of places and I haven't really gotten a clear answer yet. I recently got the Samsung BD-UP5000 Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player. I'm trying to figure out the best option for my audio decoding though with my Onkyo-SR602 A/V Receiver.
Currently I have video going straight from the Player to the TV via HDMI.
I have Audio running via Coax Digital from the Player to the Reciever. I'm then using the Bitstream (Audiophile) option.
My question is would I be better served using the HDMI input for Audio or the Analog or is the Coax digital ok? Also, would it be better to use the PCM on the Player as opposed to the Bitstream? My Onkyo doesn't decode HD signals. I've only got a 5.1 Speaker set-up right now since my room isn't that big.
I know if I went with the analog connections I would have to go with PCM and let the player do the decoding. I watched Batman Begins on HD-DVD the other night and did notice that Surround Sound wasn't as prevalent as I expected. I get plenty of bass but it seemed that most of the explosions came from the front 3 speakers.
I know I could try this by trial and error - and I probably will - but I would love to get a technical explanation as to why one would be better than another if anyone can provide it.
Thanks!

You know what, I saw you posted this in the Home Theater topic and assumed it was a post about your current setup not a question so didn't really read it. Guess that's what I get for assuming.
Anyways analog would certainly give you excellent quality audio because there should be very little loss due to very little if not no compression being used. I'm not sure the throughput of HDMI vs. standard coax digital but HDMI in my mind should be a step forward and give you a better rate. That was one of the big things with optical and still people stood by coax while some jumped optical so it all comes down to personal preference. As for the 3 front speakers being louder this is pretty much normal, you can adjust your surround output settings from your receiver if you want them to have more umph.

Ok - yeah. I've already adjusted my Front Center speaker to have a little more umph because I noticed that dialogue was sometimes lost when music got loud or explosions. Maybe I should adjust the Surround speakers as well.
I haven't gotten around to playing with it yet because I've been sick and haven't had the time to spend tinkering on the floor in the dust yet. Hoping Sunday or Monday will provide me with some time.
And the first time I was going to try HDMI, I pulled the plug because I forgot the patch was supposed to fix some of that stuff. If I go HDMI - I'll have to use the Onkyo Receiver as a through-put for Video as well though. I don't think it'll be a problem though and it is nice to see the HDMI indicator on the Receiver light up.

You can use eather one they both sound the same. The only diffrence being is the digital coax wont decoded some of the uncompressed audio that the hdmi supports. Sound wise they sound about the same. There both digital signals so. The only thing that ever my come into play would be cable distance but in most home setups thats not usually a problem.
throuput of hdmi cable is around 4.9gbps.
if you go with the digital coax used uncompressed pcm over that bitstream garbage.
As far as your front speakers sounding louder then the back use the recevers audio setup to adjust that. From where you sit to watch movies adjust all your speaker sound levels though the setup so they all sound about the same distance and loudness.

Thanks! I have a Samsung 5000 player as well what firmware are you currently using btw??? My current setup is a Samsung 58 plasma tv and Onkyo 906 receiver. Since my receiver is a HDMI swicthing unit I use strictly HDMI connecions with the exception of the wii. Now before I got my onkyo 906 I had an old panasonic 6.1 surround sound receiver in which I use TOSLINK cables from the player to the Receiver. I would suggest you use analog cables for your connections but from the last time I check DTS MA/HR can not be decoded through the player and you will only get the core DTS but everything else will be decoded.
