Very recently I was having a discussion with a friend about gaming on a PC vs a Console. My friend had mentioned a couple of games that would be coming on in the near future one would be released on PC and the other cross platform with PC and 360. I stated that I really had no interest in the game for the PC then was blindsided by the comment that I had lost my roots in gaming and therefor am not a true gamer. At that point the conversation pretty much turned into a half sarcastic monkey shit fight but thats beside the point.

It made me think about myself and I'm sure many others when it comes to gaming. Just a few years back I was a total PC gaming fanboy and would have nothing to do with a console system. I didn't even truly start playing games on a console until the XBOX released (I owned a dreamcast before that but it was more a novelty than anything). I used the age old argument that gaming on a PC was better because the graphics were of much higher detail and the ability to play with a keyboard and mouse made the games more controllable. But with todays consoles we see graphics finally reaching quality levels that are equal to most PC counterparts and when you pair that with Dolby Digital (or Pro Logic II for the Wii) surround and a big ass TV you get one hell of a gaming experience.

So I guess what I want to know is this. Has gaming evolved to the point where PC gamers are starting to cross over the threshold into Console gaming? Where the PC is now taking a second spot to the current gen console hardware?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I would have to say console even tho PC gaming is still far better experience so far.

Play Nintendo DS and Wii also still have a GameCube. It is worrying that the console arena still havent picked up a few genre's pc does so well at ....

Interesting that you say that with PC gaming being a better experience. I've got a decent monitor and do have surround sound with the PC but the overall feel I get with a console is more in depth than with my PC. Any examples that you've personally had with a PC?

MMORPG is still something handled better on PC side of things , Online is something i like better on the PC as well (no i dont have a xbox). Communication in game on the PC with stuff like ventrilo and Teamspeak is also something which enhances gameplay(or just for chatting when you dont even have the game).

RTS games are far superior on the PC as well ....

If we don't count WoW, I'm a console gamer. Dollar for dollar, it's the best gaming out there. I don't have to drop a couple grand on an awesome gaming rig for it to actually last me 4-5 years. I can just spend $300-$400 and get all of that.

I still prefer the PC for MMO's, RTS's, and FPS's, but most anything else I'd rather play on a console.

However, once Spore comes out and rips me from my WoW addiction, that will be two PC games in a row consuming my soul.

But in the end, a good game is a good game, regardless of platform. At least, that's how I feel.

I just purchased a Wii tonight so if I could vote twice I would. Also whomever views this thread, please vote.

I need to call Gamestop and see how much I can get for my Xbox, PS2, controllers, games, etc. If I can even get a good chunk of store credit to go towards a Wii, I'll be getting one a lot sooner.

Now for the nasty snow, sleet, rain, etc. to stop coming around so I can actually drive there. It's 20 miles away.

Console gaming is a group experience.
PC gaming is a solitary experience.

FPS; better on a PC.
Racing; better on a PC.

Anything else -> Console.

A generalisation but that's how I've seen it. I would never enjoy; say; Cyan's Riven on a console. Headphones on a PC using accurate point and clicking with the mouse is the best way, with the movements feeling very intuitive.

Where as say, Fahrenheit is better on the console (maybe through most fault by the developers) but the interface is there to be in your hand direct with the motions similar to that of actuality.

I guess upon forethought; it's how you interact with the game that makes the best 'platform'. For me, anyway. I think driving games on the console are a bit lack luster, partly because you don't often have a 'desk' to clamp your steering wheel to. Yet you couldn't imagine yourself playing a beat 'em up with anything less than a 8 to 12 buttoned joypad.

However I still hold that PCs and Consoles aren't comparable as a gaming platform. Because no matter what is said; a PC can do so much more than a restricted console and it can be upgraded, altered and hacked about with. Everything you can do with a console; you can do on a PC but the same cannot be said for the other way around.

PC wins. Console wins for dedicated gaming; but loses for games being 'platform specific'. Eg. Katamari Damacy may never see the light of day on an Xbox (where as the PC could, if desperate, emulate both machines and play both type of games).

Thats an interesting take on that Stanto but I'd have to say that a racing game on a PC isn't nearly as good as the console versions mainly for the controls.

Unless you buy a steering wheel of have a good gamepad it just isn't worth playing with a keyboard. On a console you already have a controller that gives you adjustable steering. On the other hand of this I do own a steering wheel for my PC and yes it is quite enjoyable but I find it easier to play that type of game on the console.

I like the comparison on the group vs. solitary experience. Systems like the Wii are widening that gap every day.

I like the Xbox controller best for racing games.

I'm a PC gamer all the way. I just like the fact of being able to play games at the highest settings possible and just adding ram or getting a better video card for my gaming rig. Besides I love overclocking and getting the most speed possible and checking out the performance gain. I can't do that with a console system.

I enjoy customizing my games, not all gaming systems allow you to tweak stuff. For instance I can't stand the motion blur in Need for speed most wanted... or the HDR lighting. So I can choose if I want it on or not. Love tweaking.

I like only PC games because it all are good and give high graphics so that I get enjoy to play it.It does not require any other device to play and I can increase RAM and I can install high graphics Card if needed.
