Actually, pressure FROM the President.

And if you're looking for legislation, the LACK OF legislation (consumer protection, in this case) is what allowed the problem to flourish. You're trying to have it both ways, that the rules were adequate in one post and then later on say that there isn't any.

You know somebody was screwed hard when their $500 monthly mortgage suddenly jumps to $1600 (a co-worker's sister). And this ALWAYS happens. Somebody finds a way to game the system and we have the bail somebody out, but this is also one of those few times where a subset of consumers were screwed raw.

Well, Obama seems very smart so hopefully he'll do a good job.

I see statements like this in forums all over the Web. Fact is our country is ALREADY bankrupt. While I don't solely blame BushCo for starting the decline, they surely accelerated it with their policies and made a recovery much more difficult. I would guess this is the source of the fear that the GOP faithful have about an Obama administration making things worse.

While there are also fears about how Obama will implement another "New Deal" type of economic recovery, I believe these fears are justified. However I also believe that it won't be implemented the same way that FDR did it. Instead, I predict that the Obama administration will implement a New Bretton-Woods system based on the best elements of the "old" system (with some new elements to reflect today's world). This was the system of policies that rebuilt the economies of post-war Germany and Japan.

Stop buying into the fear that the GOP has forced down your throat over the past 8 years. Since they weren't able to win on the strengths of their ideas, they used emotional manipulation to sway people's opinions. It didn't work this time around.

First, the NY Times article, if you haven't noticed, was from 1999 and NOT by a conservative mouthpiece like Ann Couter

Second, I'm not a conservative and this is something I stumbled into about a year ago. I had a inkling that investment banks were in deep crap last summer (as in summer of 2007) and I'm extremely familiar with the current on-goings of the credit crisis because I happened to interview for a company that pretty much started the domino effect.

The bottom line is this: Whether its hawks running the country into debt by overexpanding wars, or liberals running the country into debt with overexpanding public services it still leads to a bad outcome for the middle class.

You and I should be just as worried that liberals are in the same position that conservatives were 8 years ago.

Absolutely there should be concern, however I think our new president will be just as closely scrutinized as the one before, even more so now that our economy is imploding. However, one cannot discuss our economy without discussing our foreign policy as well. The two cannot be divorced from each other. The first step with rebuilding our economy will be dialogue with our allies and our adversaries.

The fast spending into area's like the department of defense and such will prolly decline over the next few years, already heard that Obama might plan an "investment" into America with setting up projects that involve getting more new jobs by rebuilding infrastructure and more of these things that require working men.

No magic wand waving for Obama ....

True, and I think that even The Pentagon realizes that cuts will need to be made. Since our energy needs are now becoming a national security problem, why not shift some of the R&D from weapons to energy technologies?

If the democrats takes advantage of the latest gas scare and FOCUS, then I think it can really happen. And I hope serious incentives are given for hiring citizen & resident alien scientists and engineers, since we're sorely lacking in that department.

We also need to improve our infrastructure and rethink national transportation--all of which really can create jobs & revitalize our economy. But with the credit crisis on hand, the government isn't in a good position; especially not after the near $1 trillion (!) bailout.

And I fear Democrats in legislation WON'T focus, choosing to use this time to push other (more controversial) issues forward. They have admitted as much in the past week and I fear Obama will have a lot of coaxing to do, much like Clinton did during his first term.

Dwight Eisenhower warned America way back in 1960 about the rise of the influence of the military-industrial complex. His words were prophetic, because as it stands nearly half of all tax dollars spent by the federal government goes toward subsidizing the defense industry. Normally war is bad for business, unless war IS your business. The US just so happens to be the world's #1 exporter of weapons. I'm sure this makes the insecure big-defense authoritarians in flyover country feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but maintaining an empire of 700 bases in over 130 countries is not sustainable. Something has to give, and in this case it happened to be the economy that built it.

A historical example to help illustrate what I'm talking about would be The British East India Company of the 18th century. Simply substitute tea for oil or weapons and you will have a good idea how our own foreign policy is structured.

This was actually an exciting race. I don't really like Obama and some of the people around him but it's nice that the U.S. upped the ante against the "enlightened" Europeans.
