I dropped by this forum again a few days ago and was struck by the (relative) lack of activity - which is a damn shame (not meant to be a slam at anybody). Time was one could pull the forum on a Friday afternoon and that crazy swedish guy would already be posting about downing brews (he had the advantage of a few time zones) or how he'd just punched out a cop but that was okay because the court had sent him to a social worker, who was a beautiful blonde. And when something big happened ... I believe that I posted here on 9/11 about the first plane just having hit and probably spent more time talking about it here than anywhere else. Back then the forum was just large enough to be vital but small enough that you pretty much knew who you were talking to. There was a lot of time spent arguing politics but that was all against the backdrop of, at least for me, a real interest in computers. At the time I always had two or three boxes running in the apartment, spent hours tweaking the setups, had heartfelt opinions in favor of aureal and 3dfx, was really excited when the Geforce 3 came out (even if it was from the hated nvidia - the memories from that Riva 128 died hard).

Now ... bleh (that would be directed at the world of computers, not at this forum) Cocorice posted something along these lines a little while back - I think to the effect that he didn't know that much about contemporary hardware and didn't really care to (I hope I'm not miscontruing what he meant). If that's what he meant (and even if he didn't) I agree.

I'm probably just getting old (well, in fact, I am getting old) but I wonder if my blehness isn't part of a more general phenomenon. Are young guys still getting the same fun out of tweaking or has something important changed in the tech world (or for that matter has something changed in the "world world")?

I guess I need to resign myself to hanging around in Best Buy saying "You kids! In my day we play'd on Diamond Stealth II's with 40 megapixels a second. And we were happy to have it!"

And, while I'm grumbling, when are we gonna get those 3dnow drivers?

Well if you checked the AMD overdrive links posted by Peter and Eric you could see that overclocking now results in going from 90 fps yo 150 fps orso .

In "our time" the computer would barely hit a steady 30 fps if you had "top end" hardware if you ran it in the then bold res of 1024*768 .

When we were doing stuff on our computer we ran stuff like benchmarks or seti@home coz we knew we had a fast computer. These days the benchmarks have changed so much and Seti@Home is ran on your videocard instead of CPU .

Even tho were not even talking about 10 years ago it does seem a lot has changed .

Kids these days are hooked on mobile phones, they hardly i think participate on internet unless it is something along the lines of hyves.nl/msn . Totally superficial .

Webboards are a thing of the past U need to have a blog and share "your" opinion how ever shallow it is with the world then you amount for something .
No thank you, rather be "stuck" here .

I remember back in the K6-2 days when we would all marvel in amazement at the the technical triumph that was the 3dnow extension for Quake 2. I then remember how we all discussed the letdown when AMD said that to do that for other games would not be worth the effort.

And then came the Athlon, and our concerns with gaming performance were put to rest. I specifically remember SDTom offering his skills with a soldering tool to hard-overclock these Athlons for anyone who was willing to pay for it. I was quite happy to see my Athlon 500 ramped up to a stable 750mhz.

Yea! but Those day is the best thing in our life , When you have the Unreal/UT install in yours Computer .then you found out You have had a 3dnow Extension & A3d Sound support from yours hardware ! Then you download the patch and start the timedemo and setup surround speaker to experience the A3D sound effect for the very fist time (It's unforgettable)

ahhh...memories of the old k6-2 350 days. Still have that system and my K6-III 450 system still works too.

Nope. I didn't make it. I think I got it off the AMD website years ago.

I have the original bitmap version of it if you want it. Might be a little better resolution.

I liked the K6-3 it felt so much smoother when running many tasks. Didn't overclock as well but I felt the difference the cache made especially in windows.

I remember having a K6-3 + Voodoo 3. I thought it was great, then I swapped it out for a Athlon 500MHz (which I later overclocked to 700MHz wooo!) and Quake 3 ran so much better it was amazing.

Wow nice overclock lights out... The next gen 600Mhz Duron CPUs were nice overclockers I bought 2 or 3 of them at 600Mhz for the fun of it, had one of them running at 1.05Ghz and the other one 950Mhz. I'm trying to remember but if I'm not mistaken I also had a t-bird 700Mhz or so @ 1.2Ghz+ when running it out side when it was a very cold negative 23C or so. While the CPU maxed out at 1.12Ghz or so; I was having some fun that day.

For Me "AMD" are the trusted brand (I mean Not like a car or Electrical parts)
I still remember I start build my very 1st PC with an Intel P 233MMX. Try runing game on it(Nothing Special) With-in 2 week . I tread - in for a K6-2 266mhz. And then change my motherboard to support 100mhz Bus (Overclock to 100mhz x3) And couple with Voodoo 2(+ heat sink & fan oc to 98mhz & add a MX300 sound card...
Now you have it ... A perfect Gaming system !! (For those day)

my second CPU with a Duron then come to Athlon 1200 (upgrade to XP1500 OC 1800 at the end sole it to friends) and burning a few cheap "Geforece256" too

Now I still supporting AMD (Acer Turion64x2 laptop)

ps:T64x2 standard 1900mhz @ 2000mhz /heavy duty @ 2300mhz (stable) using n-tune!

Speaking of 3dfx, last year I sold my Voodoo5 5500 on Ebay for $50.

I couldn't possibly imagine anyone who would want to actually use this card except for perhaps someone who is still playing games that utilized GLide, or an antique collector.
