Hello everyone, please could somebody help me. I am a total novice at computing and have an old desktop from about 2002 running with an AMD Duron 1.2Ghz. It has 512MB RAM. My local computer store told me that I could not upgrade the computer with new sound cards and graphic cards, and that I would have to replace the whole unit.

I don't like this approach as I want to use it for Skype and things like that which currently it cannot run. I do not know if/what type of graphics card is fitted at the moment.

Please could somebody advise me what I need to buy (maybe on the internet) to make my old desktop run Skype etc.

Many thanks.

Not sure how much of a novice you are but running skype is not something thats only possible on the windows platform.

You can download many linux distro's and as long as they can configure your soundcard you can use skype :) easily :)

http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/

But there are also version of windows XP out that should be able to do what you want with only 512mb memory.

It is a streamlined version and all of the bloatware is removed from it.
